  1. Radio is the transmission and reception of 
  2. radio waves. In radio transmission a 
  3. microphone converts sound waves (pressure 
  4. variations in the air) into electromagnetic 
  5. waves that are then picked up by a receiving 
  6. aerial and fed to a loudspeaker, which 
  7. converts them back into sound waves. The 
  8. theory of electromagnetic waves was first 
  9. developed by Scottish physicist James Clerk 
  10. Maxwell in 1864.
